Maui's Humpback Whale Migration 2018
Every winter, starting around the beginning of January, hundreds (or more--nobody really knows) of Northern Pacific Humpback Whales make their way to the beautiful waters of Maui, Hawaii. There, the females give birth, feed and wean their calves and begin the mating process with the males that accompany them. These are the same whales we saw feeding in the cold, Alaska waters last summer and they will return to their feeding grounds starting in mid-March. I had never seen a whale fully breach, let alone photograph it. That all changed this week, as you can see. Special thanks to Scot and Keely Sellers, Flip Nicklin, Ralph Lee Hopkins, Whale Trust of Hawaii and as always, to Angela, my partner in life and inspiration.
